Privacy Policy

Effective Date: May 22, 2026 · Last updated June 15, 2026

Hearth Learning ("we," "us," or "our") is a daily practice platform for homeschool families. We take your family's privacy seriously. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights as a parent or guardian.

Who We Are

Hearth Learning is operated by Hearth Technology LLC. Our platform provides daily-practice apps and games for homeschool families — currently covering typing, math facts, reading comprehension, and US geography — designed for children in grades Pre-K through 8, used under parental supervision. We add new practice apps over time.

Information We Collect

We collect only what is necessary to provide the service:

  • Parent account information: Email address, password (stored securely as a hash, never in plain text), and a family account name.
  • Student profile nicknames: Parents choose a nickname for each student profile. We recommend using a fun alias rather than your child's real name. We treat all nicknames as pseudonyms and do not use them to identify individual children.
  • Practice level preference: A parent-configured setting that controls curriculum difficulty (e.g., "3rd Grade"). This is a preference, not a record of your child's actual grade level.
  • Usage data per profile: Practice time, accuracy scores, progress through activities, and session timestamps. This data is associated with an anonymous profile identifier within your parent account, not with any child's real identity.

Information We Do NOT Collect from Children

We do not collect, store, or transmit:

  • Children's real names
  • Ages or dates of birth
  • Photographs or images
  • Physical addresses or location data
  • School names or classroom information
  • Contact information for children

The one exception is families who choose to pay through a state education-funding program — see State Education Funding (ESA) Programs below.

State Education Funding (ESA) Programs

Some families pay for Hearth using a state-funded education program — for example, an Education Scholarship Account (ESA) or a similar scholarship administered by a state and its payment platform. These programs require vendors to issue an invoice that identifies the specific student the funds are being spent on.

If — and only if — you choose to pay through one of these programs, we collect one additional piece of information that you provide: your student's legal name (and any additional detail a specific program requires on its invoices). We use it for a single purpose — to generate the invoice or quote you submit to your program, and to keep the records these programs require. We store it as billing information tied to your account, we do not use it inside the apps, and we never use it for marketing.

To complete the payment you initiate, this information is shared with your state's program and the payment platform it uses to disburse funds, because that is the transaction you are asking us to support.

This does not apply to anyone else. If you pay directly — for example, by card — and do not use a state program, we do not collect your child's legal name or any other child-identifying information. Your students remain pseudonymous, exactly as described elsewhere in this policy.

You can have this information deleted at any time by deleting your account or contacting us, subject to any records your state program independently requires us to keep.

How We Use Information

  • Account management: To authenticate parents, manage subscriptions, and provide access to the platform.
  • Progress tracking: To show parents how their children are progressing across practice apps via the parent dashboard.
  • Product improvement: We may use aggregate, non-identifying usage patterns (e.g., which quests are most popular, where users drop off) to improve our apps. We do not create individual behavioral profiles of children for any purpose other than showing progress to their parent.

Third-Party Services

We use a minimal set of third-party services to operate the platform:

  • Supabase — Database hosting and user authentication.
  • Netlify — Website hosting and deployment.
  • Stripe — PCI-compliant payment processor for parent subscriptions. Stripe only receives the parent's payment information; it never receives child profile data.

We do not use advertising networks, behavioral tracking tools, or third-party analytics on any pages where children interact. We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or data brokers. All fonts and assets are self-hosted; no third-party resources are loaded on child-facing pages.

Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

Hearth Learning is designed for use by children under 13 with parental supervision. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):

  • Only parents or legal guardians can create accounts. Account creation requires the parent to confirm, by checkbox, that they are the parent or legal guardian of any children who will use the service.
  • Student profiles are created by parents and contain only a parent-chosen nickname and practice level preference. No child-identifying personal information is collected — except for families who pay through a state education-funding program, who provide the student's legal name for invoicing (see "State Education Funding (ESA) Programs" above).
  • Children do not create accounts, provide personal information, or interact with any registration or payment screens.
  • Verifiable parental consent. Because we collect only a parent-chosen nickname and a practice-level preference — and no child-identifying personal information — our service operates under COPPA's "internal use only" provisions for data collected from children. When a parent provides payment information at the end of the free trial to subscribe, that payment-card transaction provides an additional layer of verifiable parental consent for any continued data collection associated with the family account. For families who pay through a state education-funding program, the parent provides the student's legal name directly and initiates the payment, which constitutes verifiable parental consent to that limited collection, use, and disclosure.

Parental Rights

As a parent or guardian, you have the right to:

  • Review all data associated with your account by viewing the parent dashboard.
  • Update or delete any student profile and its associated data through the Parent Settings panel.
  • Delete your entire account and all associated data by emailing hearthlearn@gmail.com. We will process your request within 30 days.
  • Refuse further data collection by requesting account deletion at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, use the tools in your account settings or contact us at the address below.

Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. Upon account deletion, all associated data — including all student profiles, progress records, and session history — is permanently removed within 30 days of the request.

Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure password hashing, and row-level security policies that ensure each family can only access their own data.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will notify you by displaying a notice when you next log in. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
